There is some pretty cool history behind Cinco de Mayo that often times gets overlooked by Americans . The special day commemorates Mexico's victory over invading French forces on May 5, 1862 at the Battle of Puebla. Many forget to realize that the American Civil War was also being fought during Cinco de Mayo. The Confederate forces in the United States were relying heavily on the French for supplies and reinforcements during the Civil War. The Mexican victory on Cinco de Mayo prevented the French (led by Napoleon III) from aiding the Confederate army which ultimately enabled a stronger Union to crush the undersupplied Southern forces.
